Director of Student Affairs
Carnegie Mellon University is a recognized pioneer in the field of engineering, computer science, and software engineering research and education.  Carnegie Mellon’s Silicon Valley campus, located on Moffett Field in Mountain View, California, continues the tradition of offering world-class, full- and part-time graduate programs in information technology and software engineering.  Specifically, the Silicon Valley offers a full-time master’s program in software engineering, two full-time, bicoastal master’s programs in information technology and management, a part-time master’s program in software engineering, and a part-time master’s program in software management.

The Director of Student Affairs has a unique opportunity to make an impact on Carnegie Mellon University’s relatively new Silicon Valley campus.  He or she is responsible for ensuring overall quality of the total student experience, acting as the primary focal point for student life and developing and implementing events to enhance the student community. He or she partners with faculty members to create a compelling student experience and effective program delivery.

Specifically, Carnegie Mellon West seeks a motivated, versatile, and energetic Director of Student Affairs whose responsibilities include:

Student Services (40%)
Responds directly to and resolves student inquiries; acts as student ombudsman and advises students on financial, performance and program issues; tracks student progress throughout program; administers student mailing lists; maintains academic student files; enters and maintains student information in the Student Information System (SIS); enters grades; processes student change of academic status forms; orders student identification cards; manages corporate sponsored tuition payment process and ensures tuition payments are posted to student accounts in a timely manner. 

Faculty Support (20%)
Provides strategic and tactical advice to faculty and Associate Deans on student affairs issues, educational policy, student satisfaction and curriculum delivery. Assists Dean of Education with budgeting, performance reviews, and running staff meetings; provides administrative support and coordinates course logistics for faculty as needed.

Program Administration (15%)
Creates and maintains annual academic calendar, schedule of classes; coordinates various administrative meetings for the program; runs semester based Student Performance Review (SPR) meetings with program faculty; documents and enforces campus specific academic policies and procedures; follows and communicates campus accreditation requirements; designs and analyzes course evaluation surveys to measure student satisfaction; manages fellowship award process and selection criteria; researches, creates and updates appropriate student related processes and handbook, coordinates as appropriate with Associate Dean of Education, Associate Dean for External Relations, and program directors.

Event Planning (20%)
Plans and executes three weekend-long events that are held every two semesters (new student orientation in August, weekend student retreats in January and April); supports other campus events in collaboration with the marketing team; supports and executes annual graduation event; coordinates activities for west coast students who participate in annual graduation event in Pittsburgh; and plans and executes student social activities.

Supervision
The Director of Student Affairs reports to the Associate Dean for Master’s programs.

Liaison with main campus
Build and maintains relationships with key personnel at the main campus.  Acts as the primary contact for other main campus departments.

Requirements:
Carnegie Mellon West is looking for an energetic leader who can multi-task, work under tight deadlines, and is committed to excellence.  This individual must be goal-oriented, have a passion for education, strong counseling skills, and a start-up spirit.  The person in this position has excellent verbal and written communications skills and a strong customer service orientation. Hours are typically 10:30-6:30PM, Monday-Friday.  However, since the campus offers both part-time and full-time professional programs, student contact and events can occur during both the day and evening hours.  Periodic later evening and weekend hours are required.  Travel to the main campus in Pittsburgh, PA required two to three times per year. Computer skills: Email, Microsoft Office, internet research capabilities are imperative.   Office is located in Mountain View, CA.

Education and Experience:
Undergraduate degree; experience in student services or higher education environment a plus.

Salary:
$50,000-70,000; commensurate with experience.  Full benefits package.

Open Faculty Positions

The position is based at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley campus in Moffett Field, California.
